The Jump Street Franchise Is Finally Cashing In On Its Best Joke With 24 Jump Street

Twelve years after its predecessor, 24 Jump Street is officially in development, finally bringing to life the famous fake sequel gag from the end of 22 Jump Street.

Twelve years after 22 Jump Street hit theaters and delivered one of the most memorable post-credits sequences in comedy history, the franchise is officially making good on the bit. According to reports from Variety, 24 Jump Street is now in active development, with Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse co-director Rodney Rothman stepping in to direct. Original directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are returning as producers, alongside stars Channing Tatum, Jonah Hill, and Ice Cube.

For anyone who sat through the credits of the 2014 sequel, the project brings back memories of that massive fake sequel reel. The credits famously laid out dozens of absurd followups ranging from culinary school to medical school, with 24 Jump Street specifically designated as foreign exchange students. Producer Neil H. Moritz recently shared a photo of the script on Instagram, leaning into the joke with a caption explaining the skip: It took so long we had to skip one.

While the original films followed the duo going undercover in high school and college, the passage of time means Schmidt and Jenko will likely tackle a very different setting this time around. Given that both actors are now in their forties, putting them back in a standard classroom might skew a bit too absurd, even for this meta-heavy series. Still, turning that elaborate 22 Jump Street gag into a real movie proves that sometimes playing the long game in entertainment actually pays off for fans.
