The Epic Games Store Faces an Uphill Battle as Newzoo Analyst Questions Launcher Strategy

Industry analysts suggest that Epic Games faces an uphill battle in challenging Steam's market dominance, as free game giveaways fail to translate into active, long-term player engagement on the launcher.
As Epic Games works on a long-awaited overhaul for its PC storefront, industry watchers are increasingly skeptical about its ability to loosen Steam's grip on the market. Speaking to PC Gamer recently, Newzoo director of market intelligence Emmanuel Rosier argued that Epic's ongoing strategy of weekly free game giveaways has largely failed to build a dedicated, active player base. Instead of fostering a community of regular shoppers, the giveaways have simply created digital hoarding habits where users claim titles without ever launching them, and sometimes even purchase those same games on Steam later to keep their libraries unified in one ecosystem.
Rosier also noted that Epic may simply be fighting too many fronts at once, pointing to their ongoing legal and marketplace battles against Apple and Google alongside the war with Valve. Spreading resources across mobile ecosystems, Fortnite updates, and storefront infrastructure has left the team stretched thin. While Steam continues to act as the inevitable gravitational center for PC gaming, fragmentation remains the primary hurdle for any competitor trying to build a sustainable alternative launcher.
Despite the gloomy outlook for the store itself, Epic continues to find massive success on the development side, particularly with Fortnite and its expanding universe of crossover content. Recent seasons featuring characters from Sonic the Hedgehog to Persona 5 show a renewed creative focus that is currently keeping player engagement high. Even with potential expansion onto console hardware like Xbox on the horizon, bridging the gap between a successful game ecosystem and a dominant PC storefront remains a monumental challenge for Epic.
