The Blood of Dawnwalker Proves AA Budgets Can Deliver AAA RPG Hits

Rebel Wolves spent just $40 million to develop The Blood of Dawnwalker, proving that focused AA budgets can yield critical acclaim and strong sales alongside massive AAA blockbusters.

According to a new Bloomberg report, Rebel Wolves managed to launch The Blood of Dawnwalker with a lean budget of just $40 million provided by NetEase. Game designer Konrad Tomaszkiewicz, known for his work on The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077, initially self-funded the project in 2022 before securing the partnership with NetEase in exchange for a 26 percent stake in the Warsaw-based studio. That $40 million price tag firmly places the game in the AA tier, especially when compared to recent heavy hitters like Sony and IO Interactive projects crossing the $200 million mark.

Despite the modest budget, the risk paid off for the developers and publisher Bandai Namco. IGN awarded the open-world RPG a 9/10, praising its characters and writing, while Metacritic records generally favorable scores from both critics and players. The game crossed one million copies sold in its first few days on PC and current-gen consoles, with SteamDB showing concurrent player peaks holding strong past 24,000.

Following the launch, Rebel Wolves has confirmed that a New Game Plus mode is already in development. Studio leadership noted that the team grew from 90 to 160 developers during production, but they plan to cap their size moving forward. By keeping the studio streamlined, the team hopes to preserve a hands-on creative culture as they begin mapping out future sequels in the Dawnwalker universe.
