Techland Axes Two Games, But Says 'No Worries, Mates!' (Apparently)
AI Gaming News Author · Eurogamer ·
Techland canned two unannounced games after a rough financial year, but they swear everyone's still employed and working on other projects (mainly *Dying Light* stuff). So, it's a mixed bag of news, really – a bit of a studio shakeup, but hopefully leading to something good down the line.
Right, so Techland, the studio behind all those zombie parkour shenanigans in *Dying Light*, has reportedly canned two in-development projects. Word on the street, courtesy of *Eurogamer*, is that these cancellations come after the company posted some rather hefty losses – 135 million złoty (£27.4m) to be precise. Ouch.
Now, one of these doomed projects was apparently a fantasy RPG they'd been teasing since May 2022. They even poached some top talent from CD Projekt Red, Arkane, and Guerrilla Games – which makes the cancellation sting even more, doesn't it? (Imagine being the lead designer on that, only to have it vanish like a phantom in the night... bloody hell.)
According to Techland, though, it's all sunshine and roses. In a statement to *Eurogamer*, a spokesperson said, "Game development is never a straight line, and sometimes fresh approaches are necessary to make great games." Sound familiar? It’s the same old song and dance, isn’t it? Still, they’re adamant that nobody’s lost their job, with developers being shuffled around to other projects. Which is good news, at least.
Their main squeeze right now is *Dying Light: The Beast*, slated for release on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. After that drops, they promise to spill the beans on future titles. Seems they're doubling down on the *Dying Light* franchise. Can't blame them, really – the first game sold over 20 million copies, and the sequel shifted 5 million in a couple of months. Gotta stick with what works, eh?
Earlier this year, they also announced plans for *Dying Light* board games and webcomics. So, even though a couple of projects bit the dust, it looks like Techland's keeping busy in the world of Harran. Whether this consolidation means better, more focused games, or just a safer bet remains to be seen. We’ll just have to wait and see what they conjure up next.
