Talking Guns Back on Game Pass: Is High on Life Still Hilarious?

High on Life, the divisive but definitely different comedy FPS, has returned to Xbox Game Pass. Time to see if you can handle the talking guns!

Right, so Xbox Game Pass just pulled a rabbit out of its hat – or maybe a talking handgun out of its…alien holster? *High on Life*, Squanch Games’ wonderfully weird sci-fi FPS, is back on the service as of July 15th. And whether you loved it or hated it the first time around, it's worth a look.

For those who missed the interstellar memo, *High on Life* throws you into the role of a teenager who, during an alien invasion (as you do), stumbles across a talking gun named Kenny. Voiced by Justin Roiland (before, you know, *all that*), Kenny is just the first of many chatty weapons you'll collect as you blast your way through alien baddies. The game's known for its dark humor and constant stream of commentary, which can be either brilliant or grating, depending on your tolerance for, shall we say, *enthusiastic* gun banter.

Game Rant reports that *High on Life* sports 'Very Positive' reviews on Steam. Which, fair play, considering how divisive the humor can be. It's a game that knows exactly what it is and doesn't apologize for it. (Unlike some other…'comedy' games I could mention *cough*).

So, why should you care? Well, first off, it's on Game Pass, so you're essentially getting a free trial. Secondly, it's a genuinely unique experience in a sea of samey shooters. And thirdly, with *High on Life 2* slated for a winter 2025 release, now's the perfect time to see what all the fuss is about. Plus, you can always turn the volume down if Kenny gets too chatty.

Speaking of sequels, Squanch Games released *High on Knife*, a DLC that dives into the backstory of one of the characters. It apparently did well even without Roiland, proving the franchise has legs (or should that be trigger fingers?).

Of course, *High on Life* isn't the only game with sentient weapons. As Game Rant points out, *Saints Row: Gat Out of Hell*, *Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous*, and *Transistor* all feature talking tools of destruction. But *High on Life* definitely cranks the absurdity up to eleven. Is it everyone's cup of tea? Probably not. But if you're looking for something different – something that'll make you laugh (or cringe) – then it's worth a shot. Just be prepared for the constant talking. Bloody hell, those guns never shut up.
