Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick opens up about the turbulent development of the next BioShock, admitting to deep disappointment over dead ends while expressing renewed optimism following studio leadership changes.
Development on the next installment in the BioShock franchise has been anything but smooth, and Take-Two Interactive leadership is finally speaking candidly about the struggles. In a recent interview with Stephen Totilo on Game File, reported by Eurogamer, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick admitted that he is deeply disappointed by the long absence of a new entry. Fans have been waiting over a decade since the release of BioShock Infinite, and while developer Cloud Chamber has been quietly working on the project since at least 2019, the path to completion has clearly been fraught with hurdles.
Zelnick pointed out that finding the right creative direction for the universe proved much harder than anticipated. According to the CEO, the studio spent considerable time and money exploring creative alleys that ultimately turned out to be dead ends. That kind of candor confirms what many industry watchers suspected, pointing to major internal reworks and creative resets over the years. Last summer saw a notable shake-up at the top, bringing in former Diablo boss and Irrational Games veteran Rod Fergusson to steer the studio toward the finish line.
Despite the rocky road, Zelnick stressed that he is now feeling much better about the project's current trajectory. He noted that while they currently have a good game, the team remains fully committed to delivering a great one. For a community that treats these sprawling single-player narratives as cultural touchstones, hearing leadership acknowledge past missteps while demanding high quality is reassuring. We still do not have a release window or official title, but knowing that the publisher is willing to take the time needed to get it right makes the wait a bit easier to swallow.
