Tactical FPS Wardogs Shatters Steam Records With Massive Early Access Launch

BULKHEAD and Team17's tactical shooter Wardogs launched into Steam Early Access, surpassing 340,000 concurrent players and selling over a million copies in its first 24 hours.

Wardogs has arrived on Steam Early Access and immediately shaken up the multiplayer landscape. Developed by BULKHEAD and published by Team17, the tactical shooter supports up to 100 players across large-scale, destructible maps. Within a single day of release, the game sold 1.25 million copies and surged to an all-time peak of 340,171 concurrent players on Steam. Creator channels on Twitch also caught fire, pulling in more than 348,000 concurrent viewers as audiences tuned in to watch the chaotic battles unfold.

The game's breakout success stems from a clever mix of tactical combat and an economy-driven loadout system. Players start every life with a set amount of cash earned through objective play, team revives, and tactical support, allowing players who excel at logistics or fortification to contribute just as much as twitch-reflex fraggers. Squads can construct heavy defenses or tear down enemy cover with environmental destruction, creating a dynamic sandbox that offers a refreshing alternative to traditional franchise blockbusters.

That massive influx of players naturally brought growing pains, including server queues and stability hiccups that prompted immediate hotfixes from the development team. BULKHEAD plans to keep the title in Early Access for up to two years to build out new maps, weapons, fighter jets, and seasonal systems before a full 1.0 release. Console players will have to wait until 2028 for PlayStation and Xbox editions, leaving PC players in the driver's seat as Wardogs establishes itself as one of the biggest surprise hits of the year.
