Supermassive Sets May Release Date for Sci-Fi Horror Directive 8020

Supermassive Games has announced that sci-fi horror title Directive 8020 will launch on May 12, featuring body-snatching aliens, a new rewind mechanic, and five-player co-op.

Supermassive Games is finally bringing its next major interactive horror project to players this spring. According to reporting by Rock Paper Shotgun, The Dark Pictures Anthology: Directive 8020 is officially launching on May 12 after previously facing delays during a turbulent studio restructuring period last year. Trading the traditional folklore and supernatural tropes of earlier anthology entries for deep space sci-fi, the new title leans heavily into the paranoid atmosphere of classic creature features like The Thing and Alien. Players will navigate the claustrophobic corridors of a doomed spacecraft while trying to figure out which of their crewmates has been secretly replaced by a hostile organism.

The game retains the signature branching narrative style that fans expect from the studio, where split-second decisions often result in permanent casualties and alter how future scenarios unfold. However, Directive 8020 is also introducing a notable mechanical shift called Turning Points. This new addition allows players to rewind and revisit key choices to save characters or explore alternative paths without replaying entire acts. For veteran players who prefer high-stakes consequences, Supermassive is including a dedicated survivor mode that locks in permanent deaths. The fresh trailer also showcases sequences where the crew explores the grim planetary surface of Tau Ceti f.

When the game drops on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S, it will support both solo playthroughs and a five-player co-op experience. Online multiplayer functionality is slated to arrive via a free post-launch update shortly after release. As digital spaces and narrative games increasingly become shared social events on platforms like Twitch and Discord, this cooperative flexibility gives horror fans a great excuse to squad up and argue over life-and-death choices together. You can add the game to your wishlist on Steam right now.
