Supermassive Games Confirms Over 70 Layoffs Following Directive 8020 Launch

Until Dawn developer Supermassive Games has laid off more than 70 staff members following the recent release and upcoming multiplayer update for Directive 8020.

Horror game developer Supermassive Games has officially moved forward with major structural cuts, laying off more than 70 employees following the recent release of The Dark Pictures Anthology: Directive 8020. Back in August, the studio initiated redundancy consultations warning that up to 75 roles could be eliminated to secure the long term sustainability of the company. As reported by Rock Paper Shotgun, departing staff confirmed the finalized cuts across development, art, production, and operations teams.

Frank Tindle, who spent sixteen years at the studio and served as IT and facilities director, shared the news of his departure alongside a call to action for industry peers to hire the affected talent. Tim Browning, the studio's talent acquisition leader, also confirmed his exit after helping scale the team through major project launches and industry events. These cuts arrive shortly after the May launch of Directive 8020, which received mixed reviews from players despite upcoming plans to patch in online multiplayer.

Industry contractions continue to impact veteran talent across the board, reminding us that corporate stability often comes at the direct expense of the people who build our favorite interactive worlds. While the studio pivots toward post launch support for its latest horror title, the community's focus remains on supporting the developers, artists, and QA professionals now looking for new homes in the games space.
