Subnautica 2: Krafton Shakes Up Leadership – Abandon Ship or Course Correction?

Krafton's given the leadership at Unknown Worlds the boot right before *Subnautica 2*'s early access launch, raising questions about the game's future direction and development timeline; it's either course correction or a potential kraken attack on a much beloved franchise!

Right, so things have gotten a bit choppy over at Unknown Worlds, the studio behind the beloved *Subnautica* series. Eurogamer is reporting that Krafton, who acquired Unknown Worlds back in 2021, has given the leadership team a bit of a…shakeup. And by "shakeup," I mean they've effectively replaced some key figures just months before *Subnautica 2*'s early access launch.

Charlie Cleveland, the studio founder and game director of the original *Subnautica* – the very chap who steered the ship from the beginning – is out. Along with him, CEO Ted Gill and Special Projects Director Max McGuire are also heading for dry land. Krafton's being all corporate-y about it, thanking them for their service and wishing them well in their future endeavors. Smooth sailing, eh?

Now, Krafton's statement hints at a desire to get the game out "as soon as possible," while also "delivering the right game at the right time." Sounds a bit like they weren't entirely chuffed with the original two-to-three-year early access timeline that Unknown Worlds had previously floated. Remember the first game? It spent *ages* in early access, but that's also part of what made it so great. The community helped shape the game, and it's a bloody cracking game.

Stepping into the Captain's chair is Steve Papoutsis, who's already running Krafton's *The Callisto Protocol* studio, Striking Distance. Juggling two studios? Blimey!

*Subnautica 2* is actually the *third* game in the series, following the *Below Zero* expansion. We've seen a cinematic trailer showing off the new co-op mode, and snippets of gameplay have been trickling out. They’re ditching the chatty protagonist from *Below Zero*, going back to the silent protagonist from the first game. Plus, a whole new ocean planet with new creatures and mysteries awaits, alongside customizable characters and vehicles.

But what does this all *mean*, eh? Is this a sign of Krafton wanting to steer *Subnautica 2* in a different direction? Are they trying to rush things? Or is this just a standard corporate reshuffle? Only time will tell if this leadership change will sink or swim, mate. But one thing's for sure: the pressure's on to deliver a worthy sequel to one of the most captivating survival games out there.
