As players await the spring 2027 release of Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, critics suggest diving into massive JRPGs like Final Fantasy 10 and the Trails of Cold Steel duology to avoid franchise burnout while enjoying dozens of hours of deep role-playing content.
With Square Enix locking in a spring 2027 release window for Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, the final chapter of the massive remake project is officially on the horizon. The wait is going to test the patience of any fan who has followed Cloud and company this far, but jumping straight into endless replays of the first two entries risks burning you out before the trilogy even concludes. Instead of retreading familiar ground, this is the prime window to dive into some substantial adventures that capture that classic JRPG spirit while offering entirely fresh worlds to explore.
First on the list is a timeless classic that remains remarkably accessible across modern platforms. Originally launching on the PlayStation 2, Final Fantasy 10 delivers an unforgettable journey through the world of Spira alongside Tidus and Yuna. Beyond its sweeping narrative and iconic soundtrack, the game features one of the absolute best progression loops in franchise history through the Sphere Grid. Sinking dozens of hours into complex dungeon puzzles and tracking down ultimate weapons provides that familiar Final Fantasy rush without spoiling your appetite for the upcoming 2027 finale.
If you want something with deeper political intrigue and a sprawling continuity to get lost in, the opening chapters of the Trails series offer incredible value. Specifically, starting with The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel and its direct sequel gives you a massive two part epic centered on the Erebonian Empire. Following Rean Schwarzer and the diverse roster of Class 7 bridges the gap between cozy academy life and massive geopolitical conflict, easily consuming dozens of hours of your playtime.
