Stormgate Loses Online Multiplayer as Server Host Pivots to AI Infrastructure

Stormgate multiplayer modes are going offline at the end of April after server provider Hathora was acquired by Fireworks AI to focus on AI compute orchestration.

The real-time strategy game Stormgate is heading into a strictly offline state at the end of April after its server orchestration partner, Hathora, decided to exit the gaming space entirely. As originally reported by Rock Paper Shotgun and spotted by Delisted Games, the sudden shutdown stems from Hathora being acquired by Fireworks AI. The new parent company plans to repurpose the infrastructure and team to handle compute orchestration for artificial intelligence workloads at scale, leaving client studios scrambling for alternatives.

Frost Giant Studios shared the news on the official Stormgate Discord server, confirming that the abrupt transition will force online multiplayer modes offline while developers work on a temporary offline patch. While the studio hopes to restore online functionality in a future update, doing so depends entirely on securing a new hosting partner to support ongoing operations. Other titles relying on the same infrastructure, such as Splitgate, have managed to avoid similar disruptions because their backend systems support multiple providers, allowing them to migrate smoothly to alternatives.

This abrupt shift highlights a growing friction point for modern live service games that rely on third-party cloud infrastructure. When backend providers are swallowed by massive tech pivots, players are the ones left holding the bag as digital services go dark without warning. For a community invested in the long-term health of an RTS revival, losing core multiplayer access serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities tied to modern digital dependencies.
