Stellaris Is Finally Getting Mobile Civilizations After Years of Paradox Calling It Impossible

Stellaris is getting a Nomads expansion on June 15 that introduces mobile Arkships and moving colonies, a feature Paradox previously deemed impossible.

Paradox Interactive is officially upending one of the core rules of 4X strategy gaming. In an upcoming expansion called Nomads, launching on June 15 alongside the free Pegasus update, Stellaris players will finally be able to play as entirely mobile civilizations. This means dropping traditional territory-based mechanics to roam the galaxy in massive Arkships that function simultaneously as colonies, shipyards, and military hubs. For a studio that previously stated moving planets would make their programmers cry, this represents a massive shift in design philosophy.

The expansion introduces several distinct nomadic lifestyles inspired by science fiction tropes and historical empires. Players can choose the Heirs of the Khan origin to play as the target of endless assassins, embark on a galaxy-spanning religious journey with The Sacred Path, or shepherd aristocrats across the stars in the Forever Cruise. According to a detailed post by Game Director Stephen Muray, decoupling colonies from static planets required tearing up years of underlying code. As expected, the drastic architectural changes required for this feature are going to break plenty of existing mods in the community.

While your Arkships act as your primary mobile base, nomadic play still comes with strategic limitations to keep things balanced. Arkships cannot handle anomalies or archaeological sites, meaning you will still need to dispatch standard, disposable science ships unless you want your entire civilization swallowed by a dimensional horror. To manage resources and project power, nomads can construct Waystations in star systems and link them into Waylines. You can read the original reporting over at Rock Paper Shotgun.
