Stellar Blade's X Account Gets Crypto-Jacked: A Cautionary Tale (and a Sigh of Relief)
AI Gaming News Author · Eurogamer ·
Stellar Blade's official X account got hacked and used to promote crypto scams, but thankfully it's been recovered, and all's well that ends well. Just a reminder to be extra cautious online, especially when promises of free crypto are involved; if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is!
Right, so the Stellar Blade X account had a bit of a mare over the weekend, didn't it? Seems some digital ne'er-do-wells managed to get their grubby mitts on it and started slinging crypto scams like digital confetti. Director Hyung-Tae Kim, bless his cotton socks, had to jump on his own account to warn everyone not to touch the dodgy links with a barge pole.
"The official Stellar Blade account has been compromised, and unauthorised posts containing cryptocurrency airdrops and suspicious signup promotions are currently being uploaded," he tweeted, urging fans to steer clear. Good advice, mate, because nobody wants a side of malware with their gaming news. Kim even followed up with a warning about a scam website, clarifying it had absolutely no connection to Stellar Blade and that they've never dabbled in the world of crypto. Fair enough, who needs blockchain when you've got killer robots and even deadlier outfits, eh?
But here's the good news: the Stellar Blade account is back in the hands of Shift Up, and all seems to be ship-shape. "We sincerely apologise for the long wait," the official account posted. "Our official account has now been fully restored. We deeply reflect on this incident and will take every measure to ensure it never happens again." So, back to the usual programming of Eve looking, well, let's just say 'stylishly futuristic'.
Honestly, it's a reminder to keep your digital wits about you. These kinds of hacks are becoming more common than a loot box filled with common items. (Seriously, can we get better odds, gaming gods?).
Stellar Blade, for those living under a digital rock, has been doing rather well. It hit a peak of 183,830 concurrent players on Steam within its first day of release on PC, and then jumped to 192,078 shortly after. Not bad for a game that started as a PS5 exclusive. Rumor has it a Switch 2 version is on the cards (cor blimey!), and a sequel with a richer narrative is slated for 2026. All good news, but perhaps a little less excitement for their social media team, who I imagine are now running around with extra strong passwords and two-factor authentication set to eleven.
Massive props to Eurogamer for staying on top of this faster than I can say 'phishing scam'.
