Steam Continues Its UI Overhaul With a Wider Workshop Beta

Valve has launched an opt-in UI beta for the Steam Workshop, bringing larger preview images, faster filtering, and better support for the Steam Deck and mobile devices.

Valve is keeping up its mission to stretch out the desktop client, bringing its recent design philosophy to the platform's bustling modding hub. According to a report by Rock Paper Shotgun, the Steam Workshop is the latest area to enter an opt-in UI beta. Following similar updates to individual store pages and the main homepage, this new version aims to make browsing through user-generated maps, skins, and total conversions much faster and visually cleaner.

The update introduces several practical upgrades alongside the visual changes. Preview images are noticeably larger, and Valve has completely rewritten the backend code so that applying filters and sorting through items happens almost instantly. Creators also get more control, with developers now able to configure specific filters for different item types within their game hubs. A new quick view feature lets players inspect screenshots, favourite items, or vote without ever leaving the main browsing page.

Crucially, this overhaul brings a much-needed focus on cross-platform usability. Valve designed the new layout to scale smoothly across smaller screens and alternative interfaces, making the Workshop significantly friendlier for Steam Deck users and mobile browsers. Players wanting to test the new layout can opt in directly through any Workshop browse page, and while Valve has not set a strict end date for the beta test, future updates for other Workshop pages are already on the horizon.
