Steam Card Battler Developer Pulls Game Over Generative AI Concerns

The solo developer behind the Steam card battler Hardest is pulling the game from the storefront, citing ethical concerns and environmental costs associated with generative AI assets.

The indie development space continues to grapple with the ethics of generative tools, and one recent Steam release is taking a drastic route out. According to a report by Rock Paper Shotgun, the solo developer behind the rock-paper-scissors roguelike card battler Hardest has announced that the title will be permanently removed from the storefront on January 30. The developer, Eero Laine, admitted in a candid post that rushing out a game over the summer using generated assets was a mistake, citing growing concerns over the environmental toll and economic impact of the technology.

Laine pointed out that relying on these tools ultimately drains resources from working creators rather than helping independent developers. While Laine did credit a new relationship for helping spark a change in perspective, the developer also noted that coding the project entirely from scratch leaves room for a potential future return with human-made assets. The current build, however, was labeled a disservice to players and fellow creators alike.

This kind of developer transparency arrives at a time when discussions around generative tools dominate community forums across PC and console ecosystems. From small indie projects to major studio releases, players increasingly scrutinize how assets are produced, demanding accountability from creators. As digital storefronts continue to navigate the influx of AI-assisted projects, stories like this highlight a shifting sentiment among developers who are starting to reevaluate the real cost of shortcuts.
