State of Decay 3 Debuts Gameplay Footage and Details Major Co-Op Overhauls

Undead Labs revealed new gameplay footage for State of Decay 3, highlighting Unreal Engine 5 visuals and detailing major co-op and shared world upgrades.

Nearly six years after its initial announcement, State of Decay 3 finally treated players to a real gameplay showcase during the latest Xbox showcase. According to an interview with Xbox Wire by senior contributor Sherif Saed at Eurogamer, Undead Labs creative director Kevin Patzelt confirmed that 100 percent of the trailer footage was captured directly in-game. Built in Unreal Engine 5, the team deliberately focused on showing off a massive leap in overall visual fidelity and moment to moment combat quality to prove the long awaited survival sandbox is firmly on track.

While the trailer heavily emphasized action, Patzelt was quick to reassure longtime fans that the series trademark depth is not going anywhere. The core pillars of resource management, settlement building, and community survival remain central to the experience. However, these systems are receiving substantial upgrades for the upcoming sequel, particularly when it comes to multiplayer. The game introduces a much more flexible approach to cooperative play, allowing squads to tackle shared goals together or wander off to handle tasks independently across different regions of the map.

The standout addition is the evolution toward a shared world framework, pushing the franchise closer to a true MMO experience. Players can now impact the world asynchronously, making structural changes and building up to three separate settlements even when teammates are offline. This system tracks contributions seamlessly without overriding individual player goals. As Undead Labs continues to pull back the curtain on these deeper management systems, the community finally has a clear look at how the next evolution of zombie survival is shaping up.
