Star Wars Zero Company Developers Furloughed Just Weeks Before Launch

Despite strong reviews and top sales on Steam, the developers of Star Wars Zero Company were largely furloughed just weeks before launch due to dwindling funds.

The launch of Star Wars Zero Company should have been a dream scenario for developer Bit Reactor. The turn based tactical strategy game arrived on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S to strong critical acclaim, quickly climbing the Steam sales charts and earning a spot among the best reviewed Star Wars titles in recent memory. Behind the scenes, however, the reality was starkly different. As reported by Stephen Totilo of Game File, a significant portion of the studio was furloughed just weeks before the game hit the market.

Court filings and studio representatives indicate that Bit Reactor ran critically low on funds in the final stretch of development, forcing them to slash payroll before knowing how the title would perform commercially. Estimates suggest that roughly 80 percent of the team was affected, leaving only a skeleton crew behind to handle post launch technical issues. The studio maintains full responsibility for the decision, clarifying that neither publisher EA nor license holder Disney mandated the layoffs, and they hope strong sales will eventually allow them to bring staff back with restored pay.

The situation also came to light partly due to an ongoing legal dispute between studio co founders Alison Kelly and Greg Foertsch, which accidentally exposed internal financial struggles through court documents. This disconnect highlights a harsh reality in modern game development, where critical and commercial success on launch day does not automatically guarantee financial stability for the teams who spent years building the product. For players, the success of Star Wars Zero Company is a major win for strategy fans, but the true test remains whether the studio can actually reunite its displaced workforce.
