Star Wars Eclipse Development Faces Severe Threat From Quantic Dream Layoffs, Says Union and Staff

Developers at Quantic Dream warn that upcoming layoffs could spell cancellation for Star Wars Eclipse, as a French gaming union organizes strikes to protect essential staff.

The development team behind Star Wars Eclipse is sounding the alarm, stating that the ambitious project cannot cross the finish line if upcoming layoffs go forward. Following a national industry strike call by the French video game union STJV, workers gathered on a picket line outside Quantic Dream's studio to protest a restructuring plan putting 115 jobs at risk. According to a recent report by Gamekult, translated and highlighted by outlets like VGC and originally covered by Rock Paper Shotgun, developers are framing the strike not as a disruption, but as a desperate bid to save the game from collapse.

Staff members speaking anonymously revealed that the studio is already running lean, relying heavily on worker passion rather than sustainable staffing numbers. Developers noted that the 115 employees facing redundancy are essential to the production pipeline, particularly given that these workers have already spent a month sitting in limbo while internal restructuring stalls progress. Without them, the specialized tool training and day-to-day workflow required to build a massive project set in the High Republic era simply grind to a halt.

Star Wars Eclipse was first announced back in 2021, and outside of a few leaked details, the community has seen very little of the project in the years since. As players across console and PC eagerly await a deeper look at the High Republic setting and multi-character gameplay, this labor dispute highlights the fragile state of triple-A game development. When management relies on crunch and understaffing to push massive intellectual properties forward, the entire community loses out when the human cost finally catches up to the production schedule.
