Industry veterans from Star Wars: X-Wing and MechWarrior have launched In The Black in early access, offering a hardcore space combat sim built on Newtonian physics and demanding pilot skill.
Space combat fans looking for a serious test of piloting skill have a new option to check out. Impeller Studios, a team led by Star Wars: X-Wing Alliance gameplay and story lead David Wessman and MechWarrior 2: Mercenaries director Jack Mamais, has officially released In The Black into early access. As detailed by Rock Paper Shotgun, the game drops players into the boots of a 23rd century mercenary scrapping for credits around Saturn and Mars, trading arcade style handling for unforgiving Newtonian physics.
The early access build embraces a steep simulation learning curve. If your ship starts moving in a direction, you have to manually fire your thrusters in reverse to stop, and much of the dogfighting plays out at long range where enemies appear only as 3D wireframe indicators on your dashboard. Players also have to manage individual ship module failures, lead their targets with slower projectiles, and customize their rides with different weapons and paint jobs. Hardware enthusiasts will appreciate the robust support for everything from standard gamepads and mouse setups to full HOTAS flight sticks, Steam Deck, ultrawide monitors, and head tracking.
The current package includes two to four player co-op scenarios and five-versus-five Bloodsports multiplayer, though players should note that a live internet connection is required even for solo sessions due to the game's shared back end database. Impeller Studios plans to keep the title in early access for at least a year to refine the user experience, expand content, and balance progression. A playable demo is currently available on Steam for anyone wanting to test their reflexes before diving into the cockpit.
