Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 4 Delivers the Ultimate Sci-Fi Puppet Episode

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds turned its entire crew into puppets for a chaotic season 4 episode that combines Henson puppetry with classic sci-fi parody.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds continues its tradition of wild genre swings by turning the entire crew of the Enterprise into puppets for a chaotic season 4 episode. In Level Five Transporter Accident, a transport mishap leaves engineer Montgomery Scott and his crewmates transformed while a bewildered Spock has to defend the ship from opportunistic Orion pirates. Director Jordan Canning, known for her work on Fraggle Rock: Back to the Rock, teamed up with the Jim Henson Creature Shop to bring the ambitious crossover to life on Paramount Plus.

Speaking with Polygon, Canning explained that the production leaned directly into the natural limitations of puppets rather than trying to hide them. The storyline incorporates the fact that the puppet crew cannot use standard controls, leaving Spock to manage the ship alone while physical comedy ensues. Guest stars Rachael Harris and Joe Lo Truglio step in as the villainous Orion captains, engaging in ridiculous puppet fight scenes that involve slicing through fabric and tossing captain Christopher Pike out an airlock in a brilliant nod to The Wrath of Khan.

Filming human actors alongside a live puppet crew required plenty of clever set design, including custom furniture with hidden compartments for puppeteers working from the floor. Despite the ridiculous premise, the episode works because actor Ethan Peck keeps Spock completely grounded amidst the absolute bedlam. Fans looking to catch the puppet chaos can stream the first five episodes of season 4 on Paramount Plus, with new episodes dropping weekly.
