Nintendo has announced a complete remake of Star Fox 64 for the Switch 2, launching on June 25, 2026, featuring overhauled visuals, new lore briefings, and innovative social multiplayer features.
Nintendo surprised players during a recent Nintendo Direct by announcing a full remake of Star Fox 64 for the upcoming Switch 2, scheduled to launch on June 25, 2026. Initially brought back into the spotlight following an unexpected appearance in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, Fox McCloud is returning to headline his own game. According to the original report by Dom Peppiatt at Eurogamer, the title sticks to the classic stage layouts of the Nintendo 64 original while introducing completely overhauled visuals, new character designs, and fresh pre-mission briefings that dive deeper into the lore and characters.
The remake leans heavily into the hardware capabilities of the new console, incorporating creative multiplayer features and control options. Players can dive into aerial dogfights across three maps as Team Star Fox or Team Star Wolf, utilizing Game Share to bring in up to three friends locally or online via Game Chat. Nintendo is also introducing novel control schemes, including mouse targeting via the Switch 2 hardware and a split Joy-Con mode where one person pilots while another takes aim. Furthermore, the integration with Game Chat lets players map character avatars onto their own faces, bringing real-time facial tracking into the mix for virtual pilot sessions.
This announcement follows a string of accurate industry leaks, confirming rumors that a modernized flight combat experience was finally in development under the guidance of chief designer Shigeru Miyamoto. For players eager to jump back into arcade-style space shooters, the June release date gives the platform an iconic nostalgic anchor alongside plenty of contemporary social features.
