Square Enix Teams Up with Google to Bring Gemini AI to Dragon Quest X

Square Enix is integrating Google's Gemini AI into Dragon Quest X to power a dynamic 'Chatty Slimey' companion, sparking fresh debate over generative tools in online multiplayer spaces.

Square Enix is taking another step into generative AI integration, announcing a new partnership with Google to embed Gemini technology into Dragon Quest X. As originally reported by Eurogamer and VGC following a Tokyo press event, the collaboration introduces an interactive assistant known as the Chatty Slimey companion. According to development lead Takashi Anzai, the feature is designed to chat with players through the in-game text function, generate automated voices, and react dynamically to screen events like defeating tough bosses or scoring rare loot drops.

The pitch from the development team frames the AI buddy as a remedy for newcomer isolation. That reasoning strikes an awkward chord for an MMORPG, where interacting with actual human players is supposed to be the core appeal. Relying on an algorithm to simulate friendship in an online space raises obvious questions about how Square Enix plans to keep the companion from repeating past industry missteps. Similar experiments, from chatbot NPCs in Where Winds Meet to rogue AI characters in Fortnite, quickly showed how creative players can break or exploit unconstrained generative systems.

While technical specifics on how Google and Square Enix plan to moderate the chat system remain sparse, the rollout highlights a persistent push by legacy publishers to force generative tools into live service titles. For now, the experiment is isolated to the long running, Japan exclusive MMORPG rather than a global flagship like Final Fantasy 14. Even so, communities across PC and console will be watching closely to see if this generative companion proves to be a useful feature or just another marketing gimmick players would rather toggle off.
