Square Enix Just Dropped a Gorgeous HD-2D Action RPG on Us – And It's Coming to the Switch 2!

Square Enix announced *The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales*, a new HD-2D action RPG coming to Switch 2, featuring a solo adventurer and his fairy companion battling through a monster-filled world – and there's a free demo out *now* for player feedback! It's got me wondering if this could be their next big hit.
Right, so Square Enix just chucked a couple of curveballs our way during the Nintendo Partner Direct. And I reckon one of 'em, *The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales*, looks like it could be a proper good time for action RPG fans. IGN South Africa broke the news, and fair dinkum, it's got me intrigued.
Think *Octopath Traveler* meets *Diablo*, but with a whole lot more fairy dust sprinkled on top. The game's rocking that lush HD-2D style that Square Enix has been smashing out of the park lately. But here’s the kicker: it's not turn-based. Nope, this is a full-on action RPG, coming to the Switch 2 sometime in 2026. (Yeah, that's a wait, I know. But hey, good things, and all that...)
You play as Elliot, a brave adventurer who buggers off from the Kingdom of Huther to poke around in some newly discovered ruins. Now, Huther's got this handy-dandy spell that keeps beastie hordes at bay, which naturally means Elliot’s gotta face the monsters himself. No pressure, mate.
Instead of juggling a whole party of heroes, you're in direct control of Elliot and his fairy pal, Faie. Elliot gets to swing around seven different weapon types, each with its own unique abilities and effects. And being an RPG, you get to upgrade these weapons with Magicite crystals you find scattered around the world. It wouldn't be a proper adventure without a bit of shiny loot, would it?
Faie isn’t just window dressing, either. She can dish out damage on her own, either controlled by you or, even better, a second player in co-op mode. Team up and conquer those ruins, yeah?
The best part? Square Enix is dropping a free demo *today*. Yep, you read that right. Jump in, give it a whirl, and then tell them what you think. They're even sending out a post-play survey to gather feedback. It’s almost like they actually *want* to make a game that we all enjoy. Blimey!
Now, if action RPGs aren't your cup of tea (or you just can't wait for Elliot’s escapades), Square Enix also unveiled *Octopath Traveler 0*, heading to Switch and Switch 2 on December 4, 2025. So, something for everyone, eh?
Will *The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales* live up to the hype? Only time will tell. But a free demo? Co-op fairy action? And that gorgeous HD-2D aesthetic? I reckon it's worth keeping an eye on. And if not, at least we have *Octopath Traveler 0* to tide us over. Silver linings, eh?
