Square Enix announced Final Fantasy Resonance, an HD-2D reimagining of the shuttered mobile game Brave Exvius, coming to consoles and PC this October.
Square Enix just dropped a major surprise during the June Nintendo Direct by announcing Final Fantasy Resonance, the franchise's very first HD-2D title. As reported by Eurogamer, the upcoming game is heavily based on the narrative foundation of the now-shuttered mobile title Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, but it is far from a simple port. According to the developer, Resonance extensively rebuilds and reimagines the source material while introducing fresh story elements, a brand new overworld complete with chocobos and airships, and an impressive thirty-three original music tracks.
For turn-based RPG enthusiasts, the gameplay reveals hold plenty of promise. The combat system leans into tactical depth with a clear turn order display and a progression loop built around equipping Visions to unlock classic jobs and iconic series crossovers. Visually, the title blends the signature HD-2D style with cutting-edge pixel art techniques that render 3DCG models in a pixelated format, alongside striking 3D graphics for legacy hero abilities and summons. It is a thoughtful way to preserve the narrative of a closed mobile game while elevating it into a dedicated console and PC experience.
Final Fantasy Resonance is scheduled to launch on October 22 across PlayStation, Xbox, PC, and Nintendo platforms. Giving a dead mobile gacha game a second life as a premium single-player RPG is an interesting play by Square Enix, and it offers a smart blueprint for salvaging stories lost to the fast-paced churn of the mobile market.
