Liza Colón-Zayas talks about joining the MCU as NYPD Detective Jean DeWolff in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, bringing grounded realism to Peter Parker's isolated world.
In a recent interview with Polygon, Emmy-winner Liza Colón-Zayas opened up about her role as NYPD Detective Jean DeWolff in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. For a web-slinger who starts the film entirely isolated after the reality-altering fallout of No Way Home, DeWolff serves as a crucial grounded anchor. Mostly communicating through phone calls and offering a steady, no-nonsense presence, the character provides a rare sense of normalcy and friendship for Peter Parker. Colón-Zayas noted that director Destin Daniel Cretton specifically wanted her to bring her authentic self to the role, encouraging her to channel the same grounded energy that fans love in The Bear.
While Colón-Zayas admitted she was not deeply familiar with the Marvel universe prior to joining the cast, her son quickly brought her up to speed with classic comic book runs featuring the character. In the source material, Detective DeWolff has a rich and complex history, and Colón-Zayas gravitated immediately toward the toughness and resilience of the character. Even though the physical adaptation differs from the 1970s comic illustrations, the core attitude of a resilient woman fighting for her place in law enforcement translated seamlessly to the screen.
For players and moviegoers tracking how comic book adaptations translate into broader pop culture and digital fandoms, casting choices like this continue to shape how cinematic universes reflect their real-world settings. As superhero narratives increasingly bleed into gaming spaces, live-service tie-ins, and digital communities, strong character writing remains the bedrock of what keeps audiences invested.
