Sony Shuts Down Fan-Made Last of Us 2 Multiplayer Mod Just Before Launch

Sony has shut down a fan-made multiplayer mod for The Last of Us Part 2 following a cease and desist letter sent to developer Speclizer. The cancellation leaves the community without any multiplayer options for the franchise after the official standalone online project was scrapped in 2023.
As reported by Polygon, a highly anticipated community-built multiplayer mod for The Last of Us Part 2 has been officially canceled after receiving a cease and desist letter from Sony Interactive Entertainment. Developer Speclizer had planned to release the project for the public this month, allowing players to experience custom multiplayer action within the modern engine. The fan-made project looked to recreate the beloved Factions mode from the original game, featuring tense team-based matches that captured the gritty survival tone of the franchise.
While Sony did not publicly detail the exact reasons behind the legal action, community speculation points to the project's monetization model. Speclizer had placed early access and development builds behind a Patreon paywall, crossing the line from a passion project into commercializing copyrighted intellectual property. Major publishers almost always step in to protect their assets when fan creators start generating direct revenue from proprietary code and assets.
This cancellation stings even more for fans given the current state of the franchise's multiplayer ambitions. Naughty Dog officially scrapped its standalone live service project, The Last of Us Online, back in late 2023 following a troubled development cycle as part of Sony's broader, largely unsuccessful pivot into live service games. With official multiplayer off the table and fan projects now legally blocked, the community remains stuck waiting to see what Naughty Dog's teased future projects will actually entail.
