Sony has signed Spider-Man: Brand New Day director Destin Daniel Cretton to a three-year overall production deal following the film's record-breaking box office success.
Following the historic box office dominance of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Polygon reports that Sony is cementing its relationship with director Destin Daniel Cretton through a major three-year overall deal. Under the agreement, Cretton will develop and produce future films alongside partner Jeyun Munford via their production company, Hisako. This strategic move locks down one of Hollywood's most bankable creators as studios look to capitalize on the massive theatrical momentum driving modern blockbuster franchises.
Cretton is currently having a standout year, with Brand New Day shattering domestic box office records to become the highest-grossing domestic release of all time, pulling in over $900 million stateside. Beyond the web-slinger's latest cinematic outing, his recent television work includes co-creating and executive-producing Marvel's Wonder Man series, which earned an Emmy nomination for lead actor Yahya Abdul-Mateen II despite its subsequent cancellation by Disney.
While the new Sony partnership does not explicitly lock Cretton into directing duties just yet, industry watchers widely expect both studios and fans to push for a follow-up to Brand New Day. In the meantime, Cretton's packed production schedule includes tackling Lionsgate's upcoming live-action Naruto film, which is slated to begin shooting early next year with casting currently underway, alongside potential development on a Paramount feature for Hawaii Five-0.
