Sony Pictures is breathing new life into its long-delayed Metal Gear Solid movie, tapping Final Destination: Bloodlines directors Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein to lead the live-action adaptation.
The long-gestating live-action adaptation of Konami's tactical stealth classic is officially back in motion at Sony Pictures. According to a report by The Hollywood Reporter and covered by Polygon, filmmakers Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein have signed on to direct the project following a fresh first-look deal at the studio. The directing duo, known for their work on Final Destination: Bloodlines and the sci-fi thriller Freaks, expressed their deep appreciation for Hideo Kojima's seminal work in a joint statement, calling the original game a groundbreaking cinematic masterpiece that forever changed the medium.
Getting Solid Snake to the big screen has been an uphill battle for over a decade. Producers Avi Arad and Ari Arad have previously cycled through various iterations of the project, including a notable effort that had Kong: Skull Island director Jordan Vogt-Roberts and actor Oscar Isaac attached before that version fell apart. The history of trying to bring Metal Gear Solid to cinemas actually stretches back to 2006, when Kojima himself first teased a live-action film. Given that Kojima parted ways with Konami back in 2015, he is not involved with this current production, though his separate Death Stranding movie with A24 is already moving swiftly through production.
While Lipovsky and Stein bring an eclectic resume ranging from horror to family entertainment, including video game adaptation experience with 2015's Dead Rising: Watchtower, the new Metal Gear Solid film still has a long road ahead. There are currently no casting details, writers, or release dates attached to the project. However, with Hollywood finally cracking the code on video game adaptations through recent box office successes and Sony's ongoing momentum with properties like The Legend of Zelda, players have renewed reason to hope that Solid Snake might actually make his cinematic debut this time around.
