Sony is bringing AI-guided image upscaling to standard PlayStation 5 consoles through a new tool called QSSR, which is already live in Marvel's Wolverine and Ghost of Yotei.
Standard PlayStation 5 owners are finally getting a taste of the visual fidelity previously reserved for the Pro model. Sony has officially announced Quick Spectral Super Resolution, a new AI guided upscaling tool that is already live in major first party titles like Marvel's Wolverine and Ghost of Yotei. According to reporting from Eurogamer, this tech acts as a slightly streamlined version of the PSSR system found on the PS5 Pro, bringing noticeable improvements to pixel level clarity and temporal stability without requiring dedicated machine learning hardware on the base console.
Studio leads are already praising the integration. Insomniac head of tech Mike Fitzgerald noted that QSSR brings out extra detail in dense environments like the streets of Madripoor, while Sucker Punch lead rendering engineer Jasmin Parry highlighted how the tool resolves fine character and environmental details with unprecedented stability. Early testing from technical analysis outlets like Digital Foundry confirms that the visual upgrade can be exceptional, significantly reducing shimmering and foliage artifacts even if a noticeable gap still remains between the base console and the PS5 Pro.
With these initial tests proving successful, Sony plans to roll out QSSR broadly to all PlayStation developers moving forward. For the millions of players on standard hardware, this means longer lifespans for current generation games and a smarter software level workaround that moves beyond traditional upscaling solutions like AMD FSR. It is a welcome win for players who want top tier visual performance without being forced into a mid generation hardware upgrade.
