Sony Brings AI Upscaling to Base PlayStation 5 With New QSSR Tech

Sony is bringing a lightweight version of its AI upscaling technology, called QSSR, to the base PlayStation 5 to improve image clarity in games like Marvel's Wolverine and Ghost of Yotei.
AI upscaling is quickly becoming standard across the modern graphics pipeline, but base hardware has often missed out on the heaviest computational lifts. Sony is addressing that gap by introducing Quick Spectral Super Resolution, or QSSR, to the standard PlayStation 5. Born from the same AMD partnership that created the higher end PSSR tech for the PlayStation Pro, this lighter upscaling model aims to give base console players a noticeable bump in image clarity without requiring a hardware upgrade.
Developers are already putting the new tool to work in upcoming major releases. Insomniac and Sucker Punch have confirmed that QSSR will ship in Marvel's Wolverine and Ghost of Yotei, respectively. Early comparisons shared by Sony show that the lightweight model improves temporal stability and preserves fine environmental details, like foliage and distant structures, much better than traditional temporal upscaling methods on the base hardware.
While the PlayStation Pro will still offer superior visual fidelity for those willing to spend top dollar, bringing this technology to the broader install base is a massive win for accessibility. Sony is making QSSR available to all developers moving forward, which could help extend the visual lifespan of the original console generation. With the first patches rolling out soon, players will finally get to see how well this machine learning approach holds up in actual gameplay across living room setups and streaming captures alike.
