Sony closed its latest State of Play event by shadow dropping a new game called God of War: Sons of Sparta for PS5 and confirming that a remake of the classic Greek trilogy is officially in development.
Sony closed its latest State of Play showcase with a massive double feature for the God of War franchise, delivering both an immediate surprise release and confirmation of a long-rumored remake project. Santa Monica Studio shocked fans by shadow dropping a brand-new title titled God of War: Sons of Sparta on PlayStation 5. The new release is available immediately in standard and digital deluxe editions, giving players fresh content to dive into right away while they wait for bigger franchise updates.
Alongside the surprise release, Sony officially confirmed that development is underway for a full remake of the original Greek trilogy. The project was verified by TC Carson, the iconic original voice actor for Kratos before Christopher Judge took over the role in the 2018 soft reboot and Ragnarok. Details on the remake remain scarce because the game is still early in development, leaving room for plenty of community speculation regarding whether the studio will preserve the classic fixed camera hack-and-slash gameplay or rebuild the classic titles using the modern over-the-shoulder engine.
For a franchise that spans decades of PlayStation history, this announcement bridges the gap between old-school fans and the newer generation of players who discovered Kratos through his Norse adventures. Remaking the foundational trilogy allows a modern audience to experience where the rage began without struggling against dated hardware limitations. As streaming creators and community hubs break down the implications of these announcements, players have plenty to keep them busy on their consoles.
