Sony and Guerrilla have announced Horizon Hunters Gathering, a co-op action spin-off featuring a stylized animated art style and mechanics inspired by Monster Hunter, Hades, and Fortnite.
Sony and Guerrilla Games are finally bringing a multiplayer spin to their flagship robot dinosaur franchise with the newly announced Horizon Hunters Gathering. Originally reported by Oisin Kuhnke over at Rock Paper Shotgun, this upcoming co-op action game steps away from the single-player structure of Aloy's main adventures. Instead, it adopts a stylized 3D animated visual direction that nods to modern animation blockbusters while mixing gameplay mechanics from Monster Hunter, Hades, and Fortnite. Players will choose from pre-set characters rather than building custom avatars, bringing a hero-focused dynamic to the cooperative machine-hunting formula.
The gameplay loop looks to combine session-based survival with dungeon crawling progression. The first closed playtest will feature two distinct mission types. Machine Excursion tasks squads with defending territory against waves of corrupted machines while collecting random power-ups inside a closing safe zone, and Cauldron Descent borrows structural cues from Hades by letting players choose their path room by room through puzzle-heavy encounters. Between runs, players can hang out in a customizable Monster Hunter style hub camp to upgrade gear and coordinate with friends before heading back out into the wilderness.
For a community that has spent years wondering how the Horizon universe could translate into a shared social space, Hunters Gathering offers an intriguing blend of familiar elements and fresh design choices. While Sony has not yet shared a release window or date, players hoping to get an early look can register for the first closed playtest through the PlayStation Beta Program. As live service and co-op titles continue to evolve across PC and console ecosystems, this genre mashup will need to prove it can carve out a distinct identity of its own.
