Solasta 2 Embraces the Larian Comparison While Forging Its Own Tactical Path

Solasta 2 enters early access with massive wishlist momentum, but developer Tactical Adventures explains how its new D&D RPG differentiates itself from Baldur's Gate 3 through squad-based family mechanics and a tighter, more focused scope.

When a studio builds a fantasy role-playing game using Dungeons and Dragons rules with high production values, comparisons to Baldur's Gate 3 are inevitable. Developer Tactical Adventures is well aware that this exact phenomenon helped push Solasta 2 past 500,000 wishlists on Steam ahead of its early access launch. Speaking with Eurogamer's Robert Purchese, the studio notes that while the visual polish and ruleset share DNA with Larian's massive hit, the actual scope and design philosophy are entirely different.

The most notable divergence is team size and narrative ambition. Tactical Adventures operates with roughly 40 developers, which is a fraction of the workforce that built Baldur's Gate 3. Because of this resource difference, Solasta 2 scales back hyper-reactive world-shaping choices in favor of a tighter, more focused experience. More importantly, players do not control a single protagonist who recruits pre-written companions like Astarion or Shadowheart. Instead, you build a custom four-person squad of found family orphans right from the start, a setup that removes traditional romance options and replaces them with the unique challenge of keeping a squabbling sibling group together.

Despite the smaller scale, Solasta 2 brings plenty of mechanical depth to the table, including detailed Unreal Engine 5 character customisation and an auto-generation feature that builds balanced parties for players who want to jump straight into the action. It is a smart approach for an early access title that acknowledges player expectations while carving out its own distinct identity. You can read the full preview and interview over at Eurogamer.
