Sekiro: No Defeat Heads to Crunchyroll as an Eight-Episode Series in 2027

Crunchyroll announced that FromSoftware's Sekiro: No Defeat will premiere as an eight-episode streaming series in January 2027, featuring extended cuts not shown in its recent Japanese theatrical film run.

FromSoftware fans waiting to see how Ashina translates to animation finally have a firm release window. Polygon reports that Crunchyroll has slated the upcoming adaptation, titled Sekiro: No Defeat, for a streaming debut in January 2027. Rather than arriving as a standalone watch, the project is dropping as a weekly episodic series.

The streaming release actually brings a structural shift from the project's initial rollout. Producer Tetsushi Suzuki explained that while the team originally built the project as an eight-episode television run, they later pivoted to release an edited 107-minute feature film in Japanese theaters first to showcase its high-end visual and audio design on the big screen.

Fans who catch the streaming release can expect fresh cuts and sequences that were left out of the theatrical cut. Directed by Kenichi Kutsuna at studio Qzil.la, the series will dive back into the brutal wars of Ashina, following the silent shinobi Sekiro and the Divine Heir as they push back against the Interior Ministry.

For players who spend as much time diving into lore breakdowns on YouTube as mastering deflection timings in combat, this extended format offers a welcome chance to explore the setting further. Weekly drops also give the community plenty of room for episodic reactions and theory crafting once January arrives.
