Sega Marks Sonic's 35th Anniversary with a Six-Thousand-Dollar Porcelain Statue

Sega and YOYOYO are celebrating Sonic the Hedgehog's 35th anniversary with an ultra-exclusive porcelain statue priced at roughly $6,500 and limited to fifty pieces worldwide.

Sonic the Hedgehog is officially turning thirty-five, and Sega is celebrating the milestone with a collectible that only the most dedicated collectors can even dream of owning. As reported by Game Rant, the publisher has teamed up with Japanese porcelain brand YOYOYO to create an ultra-exclusive Arita ware statue of the iconic blue mascot. Titled Infinite Blue, the piece stands at just over eight inches tall and uses traditional gosu pigment to capture Sonic in mid-run. Development on the statue took eight months, which helps explain the jaw-dropping price tag of roughly $6,500.

Scarcity is the name of the game here, as global production is capped at a mere fifty pieces. Five of those units will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis at a special Tokyo exhibition, while the remaining forty-five will be doled out via an online lottery system later in October. It sits in stark contrast to the digital economies and accessible battle passes that define modern gaming. Instead, this is a throwback to traditional luxury physical merchandising, albeit priced for the ultra-wealthy tier of fandom.

While fans might prefer a major new game announcement to anchor the anniversary, Sega has leaned heavily into eccentric physical tributes this year. Between this porcelain masterpiece and a bizarre life-size synthetic DNA build released earlier, the company continues to find novel ways to keep its mascot in the cultural conversation. For the rest of us, admiring the craftsmanship from a safe digital distance will simply have to suffice.
