Sega is officially digging back into its arcade archives. According to a recent report by Polygon, the classic fantasy beat 'em up Golden Axe is returning as an animated series on Paramount Plus this September. The show leans heavily into a comedic, self-aware tone that feels heavily inspired by adult animated fantasy hits like The Legend of Vox Machina. Instead of playing it straight, Sega and the production team are embracing the inherent goofiness of the late eighties arcade era while serving up plenty of action for long-time fans.
The series brings back iconic heroes including Ax Battler, Tyris Flare, and Gilius Thunderhead as they reunite to stop the persistent villain Death Adder. The voice cast brings serious comedy pedigree to the project. Matthew Rhys is voicing Gilius, Lisa Gilroy takes on Tyris, Liam McIntyre plays Ax Battler, and Carl Tart voices the deep cut character Chronos Evil Lait from Golden Axe 3. The show also introduces a brand new character named Hampton Squib, voiced by Danny Pudi, who plays an inexperienced adventurer trying to tag along with the legendary warriors.
For players who grew up pumping quarters into arcade cabinets, this adaptation represents a fun nostalgic trip that refuses to take itself too seriously. Dropping all ten episodes at once on September 16 gives the community a complete binge-watch option. It is another interesting step for Sega as the company continues successfully translating its classic IP catalog into modern entertainment formats following the box-office momentum of the Sonic the Hedgehog films.
