Sega has partnered with LOM BABY to create a life-sized Sonic the Hedgehog statue containing synthetic DNA for the franchise's thirty-fifth anniversary, currently scheduled to go on display in Tokyo.
Sega is leaning hard into unusual promotional stunts to celebrate the thirty-fifth anniversary of its iconic mascot. Visitors heading to the official Sega store in Tokyo will soon be able to view a life-sized statue of Sonic the Hedgehog that actually features a strand of synthetic DNA embedded inside its transparent chest. According to a report by Marc Deschamps at Game Rant, the biological art project was developed in partnership with biotechnology group LOM BABY.
The synthetic DNA strand was crafted to encapsulate the core elements of the beloved blue blur, famously including his signature spin dash, his heroic traits, and even his well-known in-game struggles with water. That custom genetic material was then placed securely inside a green Chaos Emerald replica. LOM BABY has built a reputation for this kind of niche creative work, having previously crafted an artificial recreation of the T-Virus for Capcom's Resident Evil earlier this year.
The unique display is part of a much broader anniversary celebration that includes fresh DLC reveals for Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds and the announcement of a brand new spin-off title named Sonic Pico Park. While it remains unconfirmed if the DNA statue will make an appearance outside of Japan, it officially goes on display at the Tokyo store on June 23, giving local fans a bizarre and memorable piece of gaming history to check out in person.
