Sega Adds Tupac Shakur to Yakuza Spin-off Stranger Than Heaven

Sega announced that legendary rapper Tupac Shakur will appear in the upcoming Yakuza spin-off Stranger Than Heaven, set for release in January 2027.

Summer Game Fest brought plenty of major reveals, but Sega and RGG Studio managed to drop one of the most unexpected casting announcements in gaming history. During the showcase, a new trailer for Stranger Than Heaven confirmed a January 15, 2027 release date for PlayStation 5, PC, and Xbox Series X. The real headline grabber, however, was the closing reveal that legendary rapper Tupac Shakur will appear in the game. Thirty years after his passing in 1996, the hip hop icon is stepping into the digital underworld.

According to Sega, the inclusion comes with official permission and ongoing supervision from Tupac's estate, Amaru Entertainment. Developers emphasized that the team built the character design entirely from archival footage and photographs in close collaboration with the estate, deliberately avoiding generative AI tools to handle his likeness. Tupac joins late Japanese acting icon Bunta Sugawara as the second deceased historical figure featured in the title, raising interesting questions about how virtual cameos and digital preservation will continue to evolve in modern interactive media.

Beyond the headline-grabbing casting, Stranger Than Heaven is shaping up to be an ambitious narrative project for fans of the Like a Dragon universe. Serving as an origin story for the notorious Tojo Clan, the action-adventure game spans multiple eras in Japanese history from 1915 to 1965. Players will follow protagonist Makoto Daito and his lifelong friend Yu Shinjo as they navigate the brutal rise to power in the criminal underworld across five distinct time periods and cities. Originally known under the codename Project Century, the game launches early next year and is already cementing its place as one of the most talked about single-player releases on the horizon.
