A recent Magic: The Gathering expansion, Secrets of Strixhaven, has sparked a major price spike for The Gitrog, Ravenous Ride, turning an overlooked card into a Commander meta staple through clever synergy with Dina, Essence Brewer, as reported by Polygon.
Every major card drop in Magic: The Gathering brings a wave of meta shifts, but it is always fascinating to watch the secondary market react when an overlooked card suddenly finds its home. According to a recent report by Polygon, the latest Secrets of Strixhaven expansion has breathed new life into older sets, sparking a dramatic value climb for The Gitrog, Ravenous Ride. Originally sourced from Outlaws of Thunder Junction, this five-mana Legendary Frog Horror Mount has quickly transformed from a budget bin staple into one of the most talked-about pieces in current Golgari builds.
The card is seeing a surge in demand largely due to its synergy with the new iteration of Dina, Essence Brewer. When paired together, the mechanics create a powerful engine for sacrifice loops, massive card draw, and rapid land ramping without sacrificing board presence. Players who previously overlooked the card are now scrambling to secure copies for their Commander decks. As a result, market values have jumped significantly from under a dollar to around $3.50, with actual selling prices doubling that estimate on platforms like TCGplayer as the community tests out the combo.
Shifts like this highlight the vibrant and volatile nature of trading card economies, where digital ownership and physical secondary markets constantly intersect based on community discovery. Whether you are grinding matches on MTG Arena or building physical decks for local Commander nights, seeing an under-appreciated card suddenly dominate the meta is a classic part of the card game lifecycle. It proves that clever synergy will always trump initial hype when players start digging into new expansion interactions.
