Robotic survival sandbox Scrap Mechanic is officially leaving early access for its 1.0 release on July 24th after ten years of development, bringing a graphical upgrade and the Drilling Thunder update.
Ten years is an eternity in the gaming industry, but survival sandbox favorite Scrap Mechanic is finally crossing the finish line. Developer Axolot Games announced via Rock Paper Shotgun that the robotic engineering and survival title will officially leave early access on July 24th. For a game that first welcomed players into its workshop back in January 2016, reaching version 1.0 marks a massive milestone for a community that has spent a decade building elaborate vehicles, automated bases, and giant mechanical contraptions.
Details on the final 1.0 update, officially titled Drilling Thunder, are still relatively scarce, but the release trailer points to some heavy additions. Players can expect a major graphical overhaul alongside new survival mechanics, mysterious drone loot drops, a colosseum style battle arena, and plenty of heavy duty excavation tools. More specific patch notes are expected to drop right before launch.
Long running early access titles occupy a fascinating space in modern gaming culture, often serving as community driven labs where players and developers co-create experiences over many years. Scrap Mechanic has maintained a dedicated player base through sheer creative freedom and endless sandbox potential. Seeing a project of this scale finally graduate to a full release is always a great moment for the PC survival scene.
