Anime fans looking for the next big obsession should keep an eye on Crunchyroll this summer. According to a recent report by Polygon, studio Science Saru is officially launching Jaadugar: A Witch in Mongolia on July 4. The series adapts the acclaimed manga A Witch's Life in Mongol, bringing a gritty and intellectual 13th-century survival story to the streaming platform. Known for distinctive visual styles in projects like Devilman Crybaby and Dandadan, Science Saru is positioning this historical drama to be the season's breakout hit.
The narrative follows Sitara, a brilliant young orphan in Persia who is well-versed in astronomy and mathematics during the Islamic Golden Age. When Mongol forces led by Genghis Khan sack her city, she is captured by Tolui and brought to the Mongolian court. In this harsh new environment, her education brands her with the derogatory label of witch, forcing her to navigate complex political maneuvering and patriarchal traditions to survive. The juxtaposition of a deceptively sweet art style against a brutal historical backdrop creates an immediate and compelling hook for viewers who love deep world-building.
Creative talent behind the project further elevates expectations for the adaptation. Naoko Yamada, celebrated for work like A Silent Voice, is directing the series, while Abel Gongora handles art direction and Kenichi Yoshida leads character designs. For a community that treats seasonal anime premieres as major social viewing events on Discord and Twitch watch parties, Jaadugar offers a rich narrative grounded in meticulous historical research. Check out the original reporting on Polygon to read more about why this title is poised to dominate summer watchlists.
