Rust Gets a Decade Overdue Character Rework and Visual Glow Up

Facepunch Studios is giving Rust players a massive visual upgrade by replacing the game's decade-old character model with a brand new, highly customizable avatar framework designed to support better animations and future features.

Facepunch Studios is finally giving Rust players a fresh look after nearly ten years of service from the original character models. As reported by Rock Paper Shotgun, the survival game has received a major update that completely replaces the aging player model from the ground up. Developer notes shared on Steam highlight that while patch fixes and band aid solutions kept the old avatar going for a while, it was ultimately holding back the team from implementing bigger improvements to character design, animations, and future features.

The overhaul brings entirely new head options equipped with proper eyelashes and improved eye lighting, alongside a broader selection of hairstyles and facial hair. Every single clothing item in the game has also been reworked to fit seamlessly with the new models. Beyond the visual upgrade, this foundation allows Facepunch to start overhauling its animation systems. The studio is rolling out new developer tools designed to make player movements feel less robotic and much more lifelike while cutting down on animation bugs moving forward.

For a game centered around brutal survival, the ability to look slightly less weathered while gathering resources is a welcome shift. Rust has evolved massively over the years through shifting modes, map events, and technical updates, but upgrading the core avatar framework sets the stage for a much smoother experience on PC and Mac.
