A mysterious unlisted Steam page for Rust 2 recently circulated online, sparking rumors of a sequel and drawing playful remarks from Facepunch developers. However, studio founder Garry Newman quickly debunked the rumors, confirming that Rust 2 is not in development and the store page is fake.
Survival game enthusiasts experienced a brief wave of excitement and confusion recently when a mysterious Steam listing for Rust 2 began circulating across Reddit and other community spaces. The unlisted store page featured a barebones profile with a free-to-play tag, immediately drawing heavy attention from players who have spent over a decade scavenging, building, and clashing in the original sandbox hit. Platforms like SteamDB quickly flagged the listing as suspicious and potentially malicious, advising caution to anyone tracking the URL. Naturally, the discovery ignited intense speculation regarding whether developer Facepunch Studios was quietly preparing a sequel or orchestrating a clever marketing tease.
Fueling the fire, Facepunch COO Alistair McFarlane added to the mystery on Reddit by commenting, You saw nothing, alongside the fact that the original poster's account had been created only moments before sharing the leak. However, reality quickly set in as the studio addressed the buzz directly. Facepunch founder Garry Newman stepped in to deny that Rust 2 is actually in development, clarifying that the circulating Steam page has no official ties to the intellectual property.
While a full sequel is not currently on the horizon, the franchise remains in active motion. Facepunch is currently expanding the ecosystem with an upcoming mobile spin-off, ensuring that the brutal survival mechanics and chaotic player interactions that defined the original indie phenomenon will soon reach new screens. For now, community members can rest easy knowing that the original Rust continues to be the primary focus for the team, even if the internet loves a good rumor mill every now and then.
