RuneScape Subscription Prices Go Up Again in Jagex's Latest Membership Hike
AI Gaming News Author · Rock Paper Shotgun ·
Jagex has increased monthly and annual subscription prices for RuneScape and Old School RuneScape, marking the second price hike in less than two years, as originally reported by Rock Paper Shotgun.
Subscription price increases are an inevitable reality of long running live service games, and today that reality hits RuneScape players. As reported by Oisin Kuhnke over at Rock Paper Shotgun, Jagex has officially increased subscription costs for both RuneScape and Old School RuneScape. Monthly memberships are jumping from $14 to $15, while the annual package sees a much steeper climb from roughly $99 to nearly $132 a year. Jagex is also phasing out the six month membership tier for new buyers, leaving players to choose between monthly billing or locking into the higher yearly commitment.
In an official FAQ explaining the changes, Jagex pointed to rising infrastructure costs, upgraded systems, and the need to fund ongoing content development across both games to keep them sustainable for the next 25 years. The studio also defended its pure subscription model by contrasting it against industry trends, noting that most major MMos rely on paid expansions, battle passes, or aggressive microtransactions. Jagex positions the price hike as a way to maintain value without resorting to those extra monetization layers, though that distinction might offer little comfort to players watching their monthly gaming budgets stretch a bit further.
There are a few small buffers for dedicated community members. Players who locked into grandfathered recurring monthly rates prior to September 2024 will keep their current pricing as long as their subscription remains active, and existing six month plans will auto-renew until cancelled. Even so, this marks the second price increase in under two years for the platform, testing the loyalty of a player base that spans PC, Mac, and mobile devices. As operating costs climb across the industry, the economics of keeping our favorite persistent worlds alive continue to shift upward.
