RuneScape: Dragonwilds is bringing the long-running franchise to consoles for the first time with a PS5 release later this year, following a successful Steam Early Access launch.
RuneScape is finally making the jump to home consoles. During Sony's recent State of Play showcase, Jagex announced that the survival-crafting spinoff RuneScape: Dragonwilds is headed to the PlayStation 5 later this year, with a planned launch that also includes PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium tiers. This marks a major milestone for a franchise that started out in web browsers back in 2001 and has since built a massive legacy with over 300 million accounts created.
Dragonwilds originally launched in Steam Early Access this past April, where it has quietly built solid momentum by selling over one million copies and pulling in an 81 percent user approval rating. Designed for up to four players in co-op, the open-world game drops you into the Ashenfall region to hunt down the Dragon Queen. It leans heavily into survival crafting tropes, but adds a unique spin by letting players use magic for basic tasks like summoning a spectral ax to chop wood or using water incantations to round up fish, all while leveling up classic skills and fighting nostalgic enemies like Zogres and Black Knights.
For long-time fans and survival genre regulars alike, this console port opens up a familiar world to a completely new audience. As reported by Elijah Gonzalez over at Polygon, bringing the game to PS5 is a smart way to bridge decades of MMORPG history with modern co-op trends. You can read the original coverage on Polygon.
