RuneScape Developer Pulls Trailer Following Generative AI Backlash

Jagex pulled a RuneScape 3 trailer after fans spotted a six-fingered knight and modern sneakers, leading the developer to overhaul its vetting process for external partners.

Jagex has pulled a promotional trailer for the upcoming RuneScape 3 Dragon Slayer 2 quest after sharp-eyed fans spotted glaring generative AI errors, most notably a knight sporting six fingers and another frame featuring modern sneakers on a medieval warrior. The backlash erupted immediately following RuneFest 2026, prompting the studio to issue a swift apology and remove the video from all official channels while launching an urgent investigation into the external partner responsible for its production.

As reported by IGN South Africa, social media manager Alex Sween addressed the community directly on Reddit, admitting that the studio failed to catch the errors before publication. While Jagex previously took a hardline stance against generative AI earlier this year, this incident marks the second time the developer has faced questions regarding synthetic media in its promotional pipeline, forcing the team to reevaluate how it vets outside contractors.

In response to the controversy, Jagex is completely overhauling its internal review processes and plans to commission community creators directly to produce future promotional materials for the Dragon Slayer 2 update. The studio hopes this pivot will restore player trust as it continues balancing major upcoming projects, including the development of RuneScape 4 and an animated adaptation produced alongside prominent content creator MoistCr1tikal.
