Routine's Robot Uprising: After a Decade in the Void, This Space Horror Might Actually Land!

After years in development, the '80s-themed space horror game Routine is reportedly nearing completion, though a key composer has departed. Let's hope this long-awaited title can deliver on its chilling potential, unlike some of its recent competitors.

Alright, buckle up, space cadets! Remember Routine, the '80s-infused lunar horror that looked like Alien had a baby with a Macintosh? Yeah, *that* one. Turns out, after what feels like a geological age in development, Lunar Software says it's finally approaching the finish line. I've been following this one since before I knew what a blockchain *was*, so color me cautiously optimistic.

According to a recent Steam post, the devs have been heads-down, avoiding premature release date promises (wise move, mates!). They teamed up with Raw Fury back in 2022 and have been chipping away at this moon-sized project. Apparently, the lunar base isn't just full of creepy robots; it's got tourist attractions, an arcade, and a mall. I reckon those animatronic space mascots are gonna be *extra* terrifying when they're trying to kill you.

Lunar Software gets it, acknowledging the radio silence may have frustrated fans. "Working on Routine has always been a huge undertaking for a team of our size and because of that, felt it was important to keep our heads down and focus entirely on finishing Routine," the developers write. "But we are aware of the interest in our work and we are sorry for any frustration that this may have caused."

Of course, no journey through the cosmos is without its bumps. Doom composer Mick Gordon, who was initially onboard, had to depart in July 2024 due to scheduling conflicts. Bummer, but the team assures us his audio assets and direction will still be featured in the final game, with the new audio team building on his work.

Back in 2022 when it was re-revealed, Routine was up against some stiff competition in the space horror genre, namely *Fort Solis* and *The Callisto Protocol*. And, well, let's just say those didn't exactly stick their landing, did they? So, the longer development time *might* just give Routine the edge it needs. Fingers crossed they can actually deliver a release date soon...and that it isn't immediately followed by a delay. Bloody hell, I'm ready for some retro-futuristic robot terror!
