Rockstar Reveals GTA 6 Features Double the Animations of Red Dead Redemption 2

Rockstar Games has confirmed that Grand Theft Auto 6 features 600,000 unique animations, doubling the animation count of Red Dead Redemption 2 and multiplying GTA 5 by tenfold.

Everyone expected Grand Theft Auto 6 to push technical boundaries, but the sheer scale of its development is finally coming into focus. According to a recent report from the New York Times, Rockstar Games built a staggering 600,000 unique animations to bring the fictional state of Leonidas to life across its characters, wildlife, vehicles, and dynamic environments.

To understand just how much work went into the sequel, the numbers offer some serious perspective. Eurogamer reports that Grand Theft Auto 5 featured around 55,000 animations, while Red Dead Redemption 2 raised the bar with roughly 300,000. That means the upcoming release boasts more than ten times the animation work of its predecessor and doubles the output of Rockstar's previous western epic.

Rockstar North co-head Aaron Garbut highlighted the granular detail driving these numbers, noting that every room in the massive open world is designed with individual history, props, and custom touches. Alongside the staggering animation count, recent showcases have teased major revamps to the infamous Wanted system and deeper narrative mechanics for the central duo, setting a new technical standard for cross-platform open-world gaming as we head toward launch.
