Roblox Introduces Facial Age Estimation Software to Restrict Adult and Minor Interactions

Roblox is implementing a new facial age estimation software to block minors and adults from communicating with each other, dividing users into strict age brackets that restrict text and voice chat interactions.

Roblox is rolling out a new facial age estimation system designed to keep younger players isolated from adults on the massive sandbox platform. Following mounting pressure, multiple lawsuits, and intense scrutiny from parents and regulatory bodies in states like Louisiana and Texas, the company is fundamentally altering how players communicate across its massive library of user-generated experiences. Under the updated policy, users must submit an image or video of their face to be analyzed and placed into a strict age bracket. These brackets are tightly segmented into categories including under nine, nine to 12, 13 to 15, 16 to 17, 18 to 20, and 20 plus.

Once assigned to a group, players will be completely blocked from receiving direct messages or voice chats from anyone outside their designated age tier. This means a ten-year-old will no longer have any communication pathways open with players older than twelve, creating hard digital fences between different demographics on the platform. Previous safety updates primarily focused on restricting access to specific mature game modes, but this new software targets the social core of the platform, where millions of players hang out daily.

While platform safety updates are a necessary step forward, the reliance on facial scanning software also introduces new questions around digital privacy for younger audiences. As virtual worlds continue to function as primary social hubs for Gen Z and Gen Alpha, platforms face a delicate balance between enforcing necessary safeguards and maintaining user trust.
